Phoenix Weather Delays Rock Sky Harbor Flights, But There Are Ways to Minimize the Risk

23 October 2026

Thunderstorms in Phoenix on Oct. 22, 2026, delayed flights at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), the nation's sixth busiest airport for nonstop routes. So far, 190 flights were delayed, with Dublin, Chicago, Atlanta, Frankfurt, San Francisco, and Detroit the hardest-hit destinations. This is not the first disruption, or even the most severe, as AirHelp reported 262 delays and 8 cancellations from a Sept. 16 storm, and 247 flights impacted by an Oct. 12 ground stop.

Under FAA guidance, the airport's non-cancellation policy means that airlines delay flights until there is a reasonable chance to proceed safely. After disruptions began at 6:30am, delays anywhere from 15 to 39 minutes were the norm as storm advisories from the National Weather Service warned of wind gusts up to 70 mph, hail, and heavy rainfall. While flights were only listed as delayed, passengers faced uncertainty over whether thunderstorms would continue to impact the airport throughout the day.

Weather poses moment-to-moment risk to flight times and connections

The biggest misconception that travelers make is thinking of a delay as an event, not a process. When an FAA ground stop or runway change forces operational adjustments, these take hold as delayed pushback and taxi times, and general congestion in the gate areas. Passengers are often further delayed when the aircraft scheduled to land at the origin is also late, setting the flight schedule back further as ground staff work to turn the aircraft around for the return trip.

As storm delays in Phoenix and elsewhere show, check the inbound flight status on the airline app and contact customer service for a streamlined rebooking process. The Twitter and Facebook airport pages also carry real-time updates, as do the app and airport website including PHX Alerts, where passengers will be notified of any schedule changes.

Passengers from affected cities report delays, increased wait times at gates and boarding. PHX is implementing standard storm procedures: terminals are doubling up flights at gates to turn planes faster. Some airlines are holding departures during thunderstorms while others continue operations. TSA PreCheck lines remain shorter, allowing for faster passenger movement. For the inbound flight from Honolulu, HI, historical data shows 68% on-time performance, 27% late arrivals, with a 5% cancellation rate. Airport CEO James Bennett has acknowledged passenger frustrations in recent statements addressing operational challenges during severe weather.

Airport and airline practices limit the traveler risk

Sky Harbor travelers' best strategy is arriving two hours ahead for domestic flights, and three hours early for international. Reserve preferred parking in advance, consider off-site hotels, and check for potential throttle restrictions.

More on this is available via best mobile bonus offers.

Use the free PHX Sky Train for terminal transfers between parking areas west or east of the airport. When arranging transportation, parents can schedule drivers in advance to meet their children at the Sky Train station at 24th and 44th Streets. Everything takes longer when there's a 15-minute delay and a 30-minute layover.

Technology and planning reduce weather's disruptive impact

Following the Sky Harbor website's checklist can save time: pre-display your boarding pass on your mobile device, or use PHX RESERVE, TSA PreCheck or CLEAR. Have all screening items ready at the start of the TSA line, as this is typically the longest part of security processing.

Monitor FAA advisories, your airline, Sky Harbor updates, and trusted weather services for the latest guidance. In the extreme event of an evacuation, passengers should proceed to the nearest designated safety area.

Be sure to properly stow your carry-ons under your seat or in overhead bins to avoid last-minute gate checking.
