Flights between Sky Harbor and Reid are nonstop, with typical flight times ranging from a 1-hour 5-minute flight listed by travel search engine momondo to a 1-hour 24-minute average on Expedia. Southwest flights clock in at 1 hour 10 minutes, while flight search site KAYAK offers 1 hour 14 minutes. In fact, the Phoenix–Las Vegas route is consistently offered as a nonstop on flight search pages. So 1h05-1h24m seems a fair spread of current times. But does this fact represent the whole door-to-door travel experience?

The road trip baseline

If 1h05-1h24m is typical in-air time, how quick is the alternative, a drive? Tools like the Enterprise Route Planner say 300 miles and 4 hours and 45 minutes, while Travelmath gives 4 hours and 40 minutes, so 4h40m-4h45m is a valid range. Expedia breaks the trip distance out a little differently, at 255 miles. That is 45 miles less than Enterprise and shorter, but a lot closer to the momondo route's 1h24m flight time. It also looks great on fuel costs.

Where flying can lose time

But 1h05m flight time requires a more complex estimate to turn into a traveling-window answer. It does not include the airport overhead. The time window for a passenger flight includes arrival-by time, security, boarding, and waiting before pushback. On the debit side, whatever is lost at the end, time, to deplane, gather bags, and go through to the exit. If a rush to the taxi line or the ride pick-up is added, that is the flying sacrifice. How much time to allow for an average Phoenix–Las Vegas nonstop? That is verifiable only by visiting the airport’s or airline's policy page, or not at all. Flight time is an easy comparison point, but not the full story.

Where driving can lose money or flexibility

Meanwhile, it is unclear if driving is a cheaper flavor of travel. Only a snapshot of live fares on a specific date can replace a warning flag with an exact comparison. What about extra car rental costs, fuel, parking, or ride-sharing? Even if driving is on a budget, it might be slower than flight, and even the cheapest flight will be more flexible in the routine than rushing to meet a car rental's cancel-in-advance policy. An airport-style drink break is easier to get from the airport shuttle to the parking lot than from the car seat. Not that anyone chooses travel purely by perceived "fun" or that convenience matters any more than it should to you. But it does exist.
